Shopping for options: How retail spaces use TransitScreen to make lives easier

Large retail spaces have a reputation for huge parking lots filled with cars, but how often is that really the case? A 2011 study of retailers showed that they often believed up to 60 percent of shoppers arrived by car — when the actual number was closer to 25-30 percent. Shoppers who walk or take transit are also likely to spend more money over the long term.

“I don’t own a car, because, counter-intuitively, having a car is limiting,” said Kip Dunlap, mobility concierge at Atlanta’s Colony Square. “In my role, my most effective selling point in encouraging people to make a switch from single-occupancy vehicle commuting to trying alternative transportation is flexibility.”

Located in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia, Colony Square is a mixed-use development including offices, a hotel, condos, and a retail space. Atlanta, a traditionally car-based city due largely in part to its low density, is making moves to become more transit-friendly. MARTA, the region’s transit agency, is working on transit-oriented development projects around their stations. Just a 5-minute walk from Arts Center Station, Colony Square is leading the charge.

“My favorite thing about TransitScreen, and something that I notice guests realizing when they interact with ours, is the dawning notion that there are so many options available,” said Dunlap. “Distance, cost, time, things I have to carry, and weather are all parts of the equation. Particularly in the Midtown region, where mass transit is more available and frequent and Relay bikeshare continues to expand, TransitScreen can be used to make shoppers’ lives easier. This enhanced experience can make them more likely to return, rather than associating shopping with a parking-induced headache.

In Brooklyn, New York, City Point is embracing a similar focus on community and a high-end experience.
